Football: Mokena Burros Fall in Close Heartbreaker Against Homer

The Mokena Burros capped an otherwise undefeated season with a close loss in the Southwestern Midget Football Championship to the Homer Stallions, 8-6.

It was a battle of defenses Friday night on Providence's football field, as the Mokena Burros lost to the Homer Stallions, 8-6, in the Southwestern Midget Football Championship.

The Stallions were first on the board with a touchdown in the 1st quarter. The Burros then came back in the 2nd quarter after a long run by Peyton Nigro, who dove across the end zone pylon. The ball was ruled down at the 1-yard-line, but the Burros pushed in on the next play for a touchdown. The Stallions then blocked the extra point, and the score remained unchanged for the rest of the game at 8-6.

The Stallions came close to another touchdown in the 3rd quarter, driving all the way to the Burros' 2-yard-line. But Mokena's defense sealed the gates, and a sack by Devin O'Rourke ended the drive. Jack Patterson also picked up an interception during the 3rd.

Two big turnovers happened late in the 4th quarter, starting with a Stallions fumble recovered by Caden Kalinowski, with 1:30 left in the game. But the Stallions came back with an interception on the Burros' subsequent drive, and held on long enough to run out the clock.

The Burros went into the championship with an undefeated record for 2013.
