Girls Basketball: Stagg Silences High-Powered Andrew

Stagg 41, Andrew 32: The Chargers' stingy defense limited the T-Bolts to 12 second-half points and proved to be decisive in a battle between Southwest Suburban Red rivals.

The Skinny: In a game that was close from the opening tip, it seemed like whoever got a big run would go on to win, and that's exactly what happened as Stagg topped Andrew 41-32 on Tuesday night in a battle between Southwest Suburban Red rivals. Stagg's 6-0 scoring run to start the second half didn't seem like much at the time, but it was key in the Chargers' victory because Stagg's defense limited Andrew to 12 second-half points.

Patch MVP: Stagg's Maggie Yandel had nine points, eight rebounds and six steals. Four of those steals were key in Stagg's 6-0 scoring run to start the second half.

Key Stats: Stagg made 13-of-31 shots, including 5-of-15 from the three-point arc. The Chargers were also 10-of-16 from the free throw line and pulled down 24 rebounds. Andrew was 14-of-39 from the floor, including just 3-of-12 on three-pointers. The T-Bolts were 1-of-2 from the free throw line. Stagg won the battle of turnovers (25-24).

Stagg Leaders: Aside from Yandel, Kara Pietrowski led the Chargers in scoring with 10 points. She had two rebounds and a steal. Carrie Sinclair had nine points and one rebound. Alexa Janus had six points, five rebounds, one steal and two assists.

Andrew Leaders: Tiana Karopulos had 17 points, two rebounds and two steals. Nicole Botich had nine points, five rebounds and two assists. Liz Jendra had six points, eight rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Quotable I: Stagg coach Bill Turner: "We average about 14 turnovers a game, so getting 14 turnovers just in the second half is a lot for us. But on the other end of the floor, we gave up only 12 points in the half to a pretty good basketball team. I thought the defensive effort was outstanding."

Quotable II: Andrew coach Bob Matz: "We didn't get a lot of looks and we were real indecisive on the perimeter (in the second half). There were a lot of oppotunities to step up and take some big shots and, instead, we turned the ball over."

Team Records: Stagg improves to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the SWSC Red. Andrew falls to 6-2 overall and 1-1.

What's Next: Both teams are on the road Thursday: Stagg heads to Thornton and Andrew will visit Bradley-Bourbonnais.
