Lincoln-Way Hockey Varsity Gold Team Heads to Faceoff at Soldier Field

The L-W Hockey Club meets Evanston at the prestigious High School Hockey Faceoff Friday at Soldier Field.

The Lincoln-Way Hockey Gold Varsity Team is one of six teams to play Feb. 8 at the High School Hockey Faceoff at Soldier Field.

Competing on center ice at the stadium, the Lincoln-Way Varsity Gold faces Evanston. The game starts at 5 p.m. It’s the second of three games in the Friday event. For ticket information, go to Soldier Field High School Hockey Faceoff.

The Lincoln-Way Hockey Club combines teens from all four schools in Lincoln Way High School District 210. Mike Deegan, LW Hockey Club president, said the Gold team, one of two varsity teams fielded through the organization. They play in two divisions. The Varsity Gold team skates with the West Division, the former Metro West Division, while the Varsity Blue team plays in the Suburban League, as does the club's junior varsity.

About 50 players skate for the L-W Club, which has been in existence in one form or another for more than a decade, Deegan said. This past year, the club joined players from all four high schools. The organization's goal is to provide "highly competitive hockey" at the varsity level, he said.

Sherri Pederson, whose son Cody Pederson is a senior at Lincoln-Way West High School, said the team does more than skate. The program is built to encourage outreach and support of the community. This past school year, they've served at PADS in Chicago and raised $10,000 for the American Cancer Society.

The team is looking forward to the rare opportunity to play on center ice at Soldier Field, she added. To learn more about the organization, check the Lincoln-Way Hockey Club website.
