Kids Cool Off with A Few Scoops at the Mokena Library

The Mokena Community Library hosted Chef Michael Niksic as part of its "Reading is So Delicious," summer reading program on Tuesday, July 17. Chef Niksic gave a brief overview of ice cream's history, before serving up three tasty treats to attendees.

The had a sweet treat to beat the heat for youngsters who attended their summer program: Decadent Ice Cream with Chef Niksic. Chef Michael Niksic treated more than 20 children in attendance to three different types of specialty ice cream, while educating the children on a bit of ice cream's history.

“[The kids] realize that I'm not like any other teacher,” Niksic said. “Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm an abnormality. [They're thinking] he's feeding us all this cool food.”

For the kids, it was all about the ice cream, as each child had their favorite of the three, although there was one clear winner.

The other two offerings from Chef Niksic weren't too shabby either, according to Ani Suentek, 11.

“I really like the second one [a white chocolate and banana creation with pecans], it was my favorite,” she said. “They were all really good, though.”

The next summer reading events at the library will be held on Test Your Senses With Food program on Friday, July 20, at 11 a.m. and a Trivia event on Tuesday, July 24.
