VIDEO: Ranch Frostie an Annual Treat for New Lenox

The local favorite for ice cream has been serving fans for decades.

History - The business was orignally called "Fitzer's Frostie" while it was located in downtown New Lenox when it opened up in 1955, according to Ranch Frostie owner Doug Hoyt.

When the shop moved to its current location at Francis and Cedar roads in 1970, it changed its title to Ranch Frostie, because the buisnesses surrounding it were called Ranch Liquor and Ranch Pharmacy.

Who works there?

  • Owner - Born-and-raised citizen, Doug Hoyt (whose video interview you can watch above), took the business over from his dad. His favorite flavor of ice cream is Butterfinger.  When asked why he loves ice cream, he responded, "It's a cool summer treat. What's better than ice cream?"
  • Employees - The people that have made Ranch Frostie a success are "a whole bunch of high school and college kids," said Hoyt.  "There's one or two adults per season, and every summer we have new high school kids.

What makes Ranch Frostie special? - "(It's) still family owned and has been in the community for a long time," Hoyt said. "When the business started, I think there were only about 1,000 (New Lenox residents)."

I have to ask who put the new roof on so I never hire that group. Fugly doesn't begin to describe.

I love that they make the workers use a pen and paper to calculate totals. I'm very sure they can afford a $50 cash register but they keep it old school for the students. I really like that.

Dale of NL I've lived in New Lenox for 64 years. Would not go any where else for Ice cream. The food is good also. Ranch Frostie gets 5 stars from me!

I've always gotten a kick out of that, myself. In a day when the person behind the counter at McDonald's can't figure out how much change you should get back, it's nice to see kids who can quickly do basic math.

In my heart I will always call it Fitzers frioaties but regardless of name. It is a great ice cream shop. I miss their hot fudge sundaes now that I live far away. It will always be part of my childhood memories!
