History - The business was orignally called "Fitzer's Frostie" while it was located in downtown New Lenox when it opened up in 1955, according to Ranch Frostie owner Doug Hoyt.
When the shop moved to its current location at Francis and Cedar roads in 1970, it changed its title to Ranch Frostie, because the buisnesses surrounding it were called Ranch Liquor and Ranch Pharmacy.
Who works there?
- Owner - Born-and-raised citizen, Doug Hoyt (whose video interview you can watch above), took the business over from his dad. His favorite flavor of ice cream is Butterfinger. When asked why he loves ice cream, he responded, "It's a cool summer treat. What's better than ice cream?"
- Employees - The people that have made Ranch Frostie a success are "a whole bunch of high school and college kids," said Hoyt. "There's one or two adults per season, and every summer we have new high school kids.
What makes Ranch Frostie special? - "(It's) still family owned and has been in the community for a long time," Hoyt said. "When the business started, I think there were only about 1,000 (New Lenox residents)."
