Lauren Peterson, 9, of Mokena, raised the most money of any single participant at Friday's St. Baldrick's Day fundraiser in New Lenox.

Peterson, 9, a fourth-grader, decided to have her locks chopped off for St. Baldrick's Day, a yearly charity for childrens cancer research. And that she did on Friday night at .

Shaving on behalf of Mackenzie W., an 11-year-old girl from O'Fallon, Mo., Peterson raised more money than any single participant at Friday's event. She was cheered on by friends, family and by Mackenzie's cousin Maiya Woelbling, 10, of St. Louis.

"It feels so weird," the newly bald Peterson said.

Will Lauren be doing this again next St. Baldrick's Day?

"Probably," she said, laughing. "I don't know if my mom will let me."

Wow Lauren u truly did an amazing thing! U no maxi me ( my sister Christina) didn't think u wud do it! But even though it is going to take a while to get used to this " new do" I still think it was for a great cause :)
