The Southland's major criminal and civil cases heard in Cook County and Will County courts this week. OAK LAWN — Ed Barron, an attorney defending a 54-year-old man accused of beating and choking a girl, said he will continue negotiating with the state about a possible plea deal before the next pretrial hearing on March 13. Michael T. Kelly, a former Village of Oak Lawn employee, has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated battery. To give the girl and her family a little “peace of mind,” assistant state’s attorney Kelly Coakley obtained a protection order against Kelly on Tuesday because, she said, the defendant had been caught staring intently at the girl in October. Barron did not challenge the motion or the ruling. Court …

The court case for an Orland Park man accused of shooting his wife moves to another date without progress.
Allan Kustok looked back at his daughter Sarah and smiled briefly before turning to face Judge David Sterba in Courtroom 101. But 59-year-old Kustok’s smile was the only different aspect to Friday’s court date at the Bridgeview Courthouse. All the court hearings since he pleaded not guilty in November to one count of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his wife Anita “Jeanie” Kustok have ended with continuances. Despite informing the court on Jan. 21 that police reports relating to the case were in the hands of her office, Cook County Assistant State’s Attorney Jennifer Gonzalez said Friday that evidence is still being gathered. “We are waiting on police reports and other labs,” Gonzalez said during the hearing. Rick Beuke, …

Orland Park man appears in shackles before a Cook County judge Monday. His family maintains its support, Kustok's lawyer says.
Allan Kustok stared at the ground in Courtroom 103 Monday morning as he was indicted on a charge of first-degree murder in the killing of his wife Anita "Jeanie" Kustok. The Orland Park man's only words were an alert "yes, your honor" after his next court date was set for Nov. 18, when a plea is expected to be entered. The 59-year-old Kustok arrived unshaven, wearing glasses and shackles. He did not once look back at his son Zak, who was in the courtroom. Judge Raymond Jagielski agreed on the next court date with defense attorney Rick Beuke and Cook County assistant state's attorney Jennifer Gonzalez shortly after the hearing started. "We are waiting for discovery in the case to try to understand the theories the prosecution will employ," …

Orland Park man accused of murdering his wife told police he woke to find she was shot in the head and she still held the gun.
Only Allan Kustok knows what happened in the brick house next to a horse farm on Royal Oaks Lane. Three days after Anita Kustok's death, disbelief has descended on the community as a family everyone described as happy and friendly now finds itself shattered, its 59-year-old patriarch charged with his wife's murder. Allan Kustok tells a tale of waking up to a bloody suicide. Police and prosecutors don't believe him. He says he awoke Wednesday morning to a loud noise. Kustok told police he found his wife dead with a gunshot through her face. Anita "Jeanie" Kustok was lying on the floor, arms crossed, with a .357 Smith and Wesson revolver in her right hand, he said. The husband and wife of 34 years were alone in the family's Orland Park home…

Accused Orland wife killer was moved to Kankakee County Jail Saturday morning. Authorities decided his familiarity with Cook County Jail after working there was a risk.
Allan Kustok was transferred from Cook County Jail to Kankakee County Jail Saturday morning after officials decided Kustok's past jailhouse employment was a risk. "Because of his familiarity with our jail and some staff, we made the decision to move him," Steve Patterson, spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Office, wrote in an email. Kustok worked as a sanitarian at Cook County Jail between 2004 and early 2007, where he made about $46,000 a year. The sanitarian makes inspections and evaluates living quarters, dining halls, recreation areas, bathrooms and medical facilities within the jail to make sure all health codes are met. He arrived at the Kankakee jail around 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Kustok remains in custody on one count of first-…

New Lenox Mom, Thanks for the heads up, but our coverage area (southwest Chicago suburbs) does not include Joliet. We would cover a case that occurred in Joliet, however, if the defendant or victim lives or may owns a business in one of our towns.   more ›
