OAK LAWN — Trial for two men charged with robbery and hate crime following the alleged beating of a lesbian woman has been pushed back one month to give attorneys more time to review evidence. In 2010, Hickory Hills police said Mohammed Shaban, of Hickory Hills, and Akram Alshoweat, of Oak Lawn, yelled anti-gay slurs while punching, kicking and whipping a woman inside a restaurant. Defense attorneys dropped a DVD into the evidence pool Tuesday that's intended to challenge the woman's presumed innocent role in the fight. MONDAY, JULY 18 A Mokena woman said that someone had broken the passenger side door lock and stolen her GPS while she was parked at the Hickory Creek Metra lot, 9430 Hickory Creek Drive, between 7:10 a.m. and 7 p.m., police said. SATURDAY, JULY 16 A Mokena man reported someone had stolen his iPod transponder from his unlocked car while parked in the 10600 block of Westport Way. The man's brother said he saw two juveniles in the car around 2:30 a.m., but both the man's brother and police were unable to catch them, police said. Frederick S. Lenz, 52, of the 1800 block of Cornell Drive in New Lenox, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol level over 0.08 and issued traffic tickets for an accident. Police Make Arrest in Little Guys Scam Investigation

Mokena police tracked down Kenneth Poindexter of Chicago and charged him with forgery and theft.

Mokena police have arrested a Chicago man they say scammed a local electronics store by paying for $5,000 in merchandise with a phony cashier's check. Kenneth Poindexter, of the 7500 block of  South Harvard Street in Chicago, was arrested March 10 on charges of forgery and theft. Mokena Police Commander Dan Rankovich said a charge of burglary has since been added to the charges. As previously reported by Mokena Patch, a man bought a 41-inch black gloss credenza, two Samsung Blu-Ray players and two 50-inch titanium plasma 3D televisions from The Little Guys in Mokena on Feb. 5 and paid for the merchandise with a check that was later found to be fraudulent. Police: Three Cars Broken Into at DiNolfo's

Three cars were broken into in the parking lot at DiNolfo's Banquets on the same day at roughly the same time, according to reports.

Three cars were broken into in the parking lot of DiNolfo's Banquets, 9455 W. 191st St., while a function went on inside, police said. The break-ins happened between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, and windows to all three cars (a 2006 Mercedes ML500, a 2007 Nissan Quest and a 2008 Ford Edge) were smashed. An iPad worth $900 was reported stolen from the Mercedes, which had an estimated $1500 worth of damage to it.  The owner of the Nissan reported a GPS valued at $200 and a makeup case valued at $20 were stolen. Around $200 worth of damage was reported to the car. I don't plant on attending another event there, and will discourage other companies, friends and family from doing so. Neighborhood Alert: Two Home Burglaries in Grasmere Subdivision

Suspects might have carried stolen items in a bag decorated with elephants, giraffes and zebras.

Mokena Police are looking for two teenage boys who were seen in the backyard of a home that was later burglarized. The burglary took place Oct. 1 and was the second in a pair of home burglaries that occurred last week in the Grasmere subdivision. The other burglary happened the day before, on Sept. 30. Both burglaries took place during the daytime, when residents were not at home, according to the release. The perpetrators entered through windows at the back of the residences and took jewelry, cash, cameras and other small items, police said. It is believed they also took a quilted white, black and tan bag decorated with safari animals, in which they might have carried the stolen objects during the Oct. 1 burglary. Chesla told police that two days after parking his gray 2008 Chevy Impala in front of his residence, he discovered it had been "keyed" across the doors and fender. Police estimate the damage to be worth $500.
