Wrestling: Langenderfer Makes History for Lincoln-Way East

Griffins' sophomore becomes school's first state wrestling medal winner. Sandburg's Lopez earns second state medal after placing second in heavyweight class on Saturday.

Langenderfer advanced to the Class 3A championship match at 135 pounds, but suffered a 3-2 loss to Providence Catholic senior Mike Togher (44-5). Langenderfer (40-2) took a 2-0 lead on Togher, but failed to hold it. “I knew he was a defensive wrestler,” Langenderfer said. “I got the two early and I should have worked through that. Sandburg Wrestlers Win Lockport Regional

Top-ranked Eagles qualify 11 for sectional from state's toughest regional meet; Lincoln-Way Central and Lincoln-Way East finish third and fourth, respectively.

Host Lockport edged Lincoln-Way Central 190.5-190 for second place while Lincoln-Way East beat out Providence Catholic 144.5-142 for fourth place in the 11-team competition. The Eagles received …

Sandburg Wrestlers Dominate at SWSC Meet

Eagles win three titles, capture unofficial SouthWest Suburban Conference crown.

Although Saturday's SouthWest Suburban Conference wrestling tournament was technically not scored, few could argue about who was the “unofficial” champion. Blue Division champ Carl Sandburg beat Red Division winner Lincoln-Way West 270.5-177 in the two-day, 16-team meet that ended Saturday in New Lenox. The Eagles accomplished that by placing 12 individuals among the top four at their weights, while two others received medals for finishes in the top eight. Winning championships for Sandburg were Nick Fishback (145) and brothers Brandon Lopez (171) and Chris Lopez (285), with the latter repeating as a champion. Fishback beat Lincoln-Way East's Wally Piech 8-4, Brandon Lopez pinned Thornton's Dominic Bryant in 3:44 and Chris Lopez won 6-1 …
