The New Lenox man who survived a fiery crash and was charged with aggravated driving under the influence was in court Tuesday.
The New Lenox man charged with aggravated driving under the influence in connection with a fiery fatal crash appeared in court Tuesday morning for a brief hearing. Judge Edward Burmila set 22-year-old Kevin Krohn's next court date for Jan. 24. A passenger in a car driven by Krohn, 22-year-old Jake Stevens of Manhattan, was killed in an Aug. 25 crash in Frankfort Township, police said. Stevens' mother, Kim Stevens, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Krohn earlier this month. Krohn was driving west on Steger Road near 104th Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a retaining wall, tree and "large metal switching box," according to the lawsuit. A 17-year-old charged with reckless homicide in connection with a fatal crash was 16 at the time of the wreck and will be tried as a juvenile.
A Lockport teen already facing a wrongful death lawsuit in connection with a fatal crash in Homer Township was charged with reckless homicide. Daniel Janik, 17, was 16 at the time of the Sept. 25 wreck and will be tried as a juvenile on six counts of reckless homicide and one count each of aggravated reckless driving and reckless driving. If he had turned 17 before the deadly crash he would have been charged as an adult. Janik was sent a summons and is set to appear in juvenile court Thursday. Janik was behind the wheel of a 1998 Ford F-150 the night of Sept. 25 and reportedly turned south off of Lauffner Road onto Haas Road in Homer Township. The mother of a Mokena teen killed when the pickup truck he was riding in crashed and rolled over is suing both the driver and the driver's father. Michele Vana, the mother of 16-year-old Jay Vana, filed the lawsuit in the Joliet courthouse Friday. The suit names 17-year-old driver Daniel Janik of Lockport and Janik's father, Stanislaw Janik. Stanislaw Janik owned the pickup his son was driving when it crashed, killing Jay Vana, according to the lawsuit. The mother of a Manhattan man killed when the car he was riding in crashed and burst into flame has sued the New Lenox man who was driving. Kim Stevens, the mother of Jake Stevens, 22, of Manhattan, has petitioned to be named the administrator of her dead son's estate. She simultaneously filed a lawsuit going after the man who was driving when her son was killed. The suit accuses Kevin Krohn, 22, of speeding and failing to keep a proper lookout. It does not accuse Krohn of driving drunk, but he faces a felony charge of aggravated driving under the influence. Krohn is free on a $75,000 bond. The driver of a car struck near 191st Street and Wolf Road on Saturday afternoon is still in Silver Cross Hospital as of Monday, Mokena police said.
Mokena police are still investigating why a driver crossed two lanes of traffic, smashing into an oncoming vehicle at 191st Street and Wolf Road on Saturday afternoon. At about 3:11 p.m. Saturday, a car driven by a 45-year-old man was heading west on 191st Street near Wolf Road in the inside lane of traffic, Mokena Police Cmdr. Dan Rankovich said. The car then crossed the center line, entering oncoming traffic and striking an eastbound car in the outside lane. Both drivers were taken to Silver Cross Hospital, Rankovich said. The 45-year-old man whose car crossed into oncoming traffic was released Sunday night, he said. The other driver, a 60-year-old man, was still in the hospital as of Monday. After a driver crashed into the Mokena Community Park District Administration Center in Main Park on Tuesday, classes have moved to The Oaks.
Workers are back at the Mokena Community Park District Administration Center the day after a car crashed into the front of the building, but classes, registrations and permits will be run from The Oaks Recreation and Fitness Center for the time being. At about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, a driver pulling out of a space behind the park district offices reportedly lost control of her vehicle, crashing into the building. No one was injured. Village inspectors are seeing if the Mokena Community Park District Administration Center is inhabitable after a car hit the building Tuesday afternoon. No one was hurt.
No one was injured after a car hit the Mokena Community Park District Administration Center, but village inspectors were checking Tuesday evening to see if the building is inhabitable. "It was like a bomb went off," said district employee Mary Beth Windberg, who was inside the building at the time. "The building shook." About seven staffers and 15 senior citizens were in the building at the time, district Executive Director Jim Romanek said. The seniors were there for an afternoon "Prime Timers" program. Maybe if more people were held responsible for thier actions then more people would think twice about getting behind the wheel after intoxication. Jail doesnt seem to deter it and the streets are full of people that are driving on revoked/suspended drivers licenses.   more ›
