Tinley Park's First Female Mayor Dead at 97

Rose Marie Ippolito Brown died in September in Tennessee at the age of 97. She led the village from 1949 to 1953.

The year 2011 will start without Tinley Park's first and only female mayor, a local pioneer for women. Rose Marie Ippolito Brown died Sept. 8 in Tennessee, where she had lived since leaving Tinley Park, said Tinley Park Historical Society President Brad Bettenhausen. She was 97 and ran the village from 1949 to 1953. "Most people don't realize Tinley Park had a woman mayor in the '50s, which was almost unheard of at that time," current Mayor Ed Zabrocki said. "She blazed a trail for a lot of women." The Loyola University Law School graduate was an attorney as well, another rare feat for a woman at the time. She practiced from her home on 16820 Oak Park Ave., where she and her husband Douglas Brown raised six children – three of their …
