Domestic Abuse: How to Help a Loved One Who's a Victim

The facts surrounding the beating death of Nereem Gamal Sam show the complexity of domestic violence cases. Find out steps you can take if you suspect someone you know is a victim.

The domestic conflicts between Bahaa Sam and Nermeen Gamal Sam were known among some of their neighbors in the Brookside Glen subdivision where they lived. Some of those neighbors did what they could to help— asking at times for police to do well-being checks, watching the couple's four children or testifying in court. Sadly, it wasn't enough to stop a tragedy from happening. Bahaa Sam beat his wife with a weightlifting curling bar as their 4-year-old son watched, Will County prosecutors claimed at the Tinley Park man's hearing. Sam is charged with first-degree murder and is being held on $5 million bail.

UPDATED: 7:27 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20 A Tinley Park man beat his wife with a weightlifting curling bar Wednesday as their 4-year-old son watched, Will County prosecutors said Thursday at a hearing for the 47-year-old man. Bahaa A. Sam was charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Nermeen Gamal Sam, 38. An autopsy report stated she was hit in the head more than 10 times. Bahaa Sam is being held on a $5 million bail. Police: Husband Charged With Murder in Wife's Death in Brookside Glen (Updated)

Bahaa A. Sam, 47, faces first degree murder in the death of his wife, Nermeen Gamal Sam, 38, according to police. The husband has a history of domestic battery charges, court records show.

Tinley Park resident Bahaa A. Sam, 47, has been charged with first degree murder in the death of his wife, Nermeen Gamal Sam, 38, according to police. Nermeen Sam had been beaten Wednesday by a blunt object, and her body was found outside her home in the 19700 block of Silverside Drive, near a neighbor's yard, said Tinley Park Police Chief Steve Neubauer. Frankfort Cop Arrested for Battery in Mokena

Mokena police said Frankfort Police Officer Donald Walsh choked and headbutted a woman, leading to a charge of domestic battery on July 25.

Frankfort police officer Donald Walsh, 29, was arrested in Mokena and charged with domestic battery July 25, after allegedly choking and headbutting a woman, Sun-Times Media reports. Mokena police said they responded to a 9-1-1 call at 3:48 a.m. on the 11500 block of Stratford Road, from a 9-year-old girl who heard her mother screaming. When officers arrived on the scene, the victim, a 31-year-old woman with whom Walsh had an on-and-off dating relationship, approached them from a neighbor's home and told them that Walsh was inside the woman's home with a gun to his head and that he had threatened to kill himself, Mokena police said. SUNDAY, MARCH 11 Police said three cars, including one SUV owned by the Village of Mokena, were damaged over the night March 10 and 11. According to the reports: THURSDAY, MARCH 8 Ronald J. Knedlik, 30, of the 7500 block of Inverness Lane in Frankfort was charged with interfering with reporting of domestic violence after turning himself over on a Mokena warrant. Police said Knedlik was arguing with a woman in the 19600 block LaGrange Road on March 1, around 4:30 p.m., when he grabbed her cell phone and the store's cordless phone and refused to let her call 911.
