Add a Punchline to Our Driving Dog Cartoon

If you've got wit, add your punchline to Patch's weekly comic and win a personalized print.

Are you blessed with insight and good humor? Or just bored today? Share your wit with your south suburban neighbors by entering Patch's comic caption challenge. Just add your dialogue for today's comic in the comment section of this post. Our only requirement is that you keep it clean! At week's end, we'll pick the winning punchline based on how many of us here at Patch giggle and smile at your contribution. The user who produces the winning punchline will get a personalized proof of the comic, with the winning words and a credit line, from cartoonist Chuck Ingwersen and Patch. Congratulations to Kate Doyle for the winning punchline to last week's Kangaroos cartoon: This is the last time we pick up hitch hikers.

Up to Four Inches of Snow Expected for Evening Commute

The National Weather Service’s early morning freezing rain alert has evolved into warnings of a potential snowstorm this evening.

What began as freezing rain this morning may develop into snow showers later tonight. The National Weather Service issued a weather alert, warning of 1 to 4 inches of snow between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m., with northern Cook County seeing the heaviest accumulation. The advisory will last until midnight.  The rain is expected to turn to snow beginning around 5 or 6 p.m.—"in time for the evening rush," the weather service said in the advisory.  The heavy snowfall could reduce visibility to under a mile, the service warns. Drivers are also urged to use caution while driving in snowy weather, as road conditions are likely to become hazardous.

L-Way Cops Weigh In on Cell Phone Ban

Police officers from Lincoln-Way area departments talk about the idea of a cell phone ban—and the craziest things they've seen drivers do behind the wheel.

A ban on cell phones has been in the news since the idea was floated by the National Transportation Safety Board last month, but what do local police officers have to say on the matter? "A flat-out prohibition is probably unrealistic," New Lenox Police Chief Bob Sterba said. A ban on cell phones, those pesky, addictive devices we swear we'll never, ever use in a car, isn't in the political winds in Illinois, according to a recent Chicago Tribune report. An industry trade group also claims bans don't work, that they reduce phone usage but not crashes. But Sterba's not in those camps. He wants people off cell phones while driving because it's dangerous. He just believes education and awareness of the dangers will eventually get drivers off …

I must be getting old because I think a law banning phone use in moving cars would be a good idea. I can multi-task with the best of them- worked busy bars, restaurants and trading floors, but I can't focus enough on the road when talking on the phone. There is no possible way I can text and drive. Don't you need to look at the little screen? Doesn't that take your eyes off the road? What if the …   more ›
