Village Sales Tax Revenue Hits Record High in 2012

2012 is a "banner year," for the Village of Mokena, as the Village nets more than $4.5 million in sales tax revenue. The money is earmarked for general operating costs and infrastructure work.

Mokena's sales tax revenue reached a record level of $4.5 million in fiscal year 2012. Village administrator John Downs said “non-traditional retail” businesses such as Ozinga Concrete, the Dunkin' Donuts Distribution Center and Shilling Lumber were a boon for the village. “We had a big influx of these new businesses and they've had a big impact on the sales tax increase,” Downs said. “Sometimes it may not be obvious to a person who wouldn't necessarily be involved in local government, some of these businesses produce huge amounts of sales tax, while putting very little demand on our services.” Downs said about two-thirds of sales tax revenue goes to Mokena’s general operations helping fund city services such as the police department, …

Village Board Signs Off On Final Bills For Fiscal Year

Village Administrator John Downs highlights two items on the final budget approval for the fiscal year, while outlining where some money is earmarked for the coming fiscal year.

The Village of Mokena's fiscal year came to an end June 25, but not before the board members approved some final spending for the year.  Among the payments, were the village's annual water leak survey and the restriping of the southern half of Wolf Road.  “Those were the only two notable items, Mayor,” said Village Administrator John Downs said during the meeting. “I would recommend the approval of the special accounts payable in the amount of $66,248.40.” Downs added that during the new fiscal year, which began Tuesday, June 26, the Village is planning to continue the restriping of Wolf Road. He also said that the water leak survey detected only some minor leaks, but that the survey saved the Village money in the long-run, as it will …

Hanging Up the Helmet: Mokena Fire Chief Ted Golden Talks Retirement

As Mokena Fire Chief Ted Golden steps down Friday, find out his thoughts on retirement, his career and life in Mokena in his own words.

Fire Chief Ted Golden has served the Mokena community for the past 32 years and on Friday, June 1, he will step away from his post. After working his way up the ranks of the Mokena Fire Protection District from code enforcement officer to the highest rank of chief, Golden leaves behind a career—and his dream since the age of five.  During the Mokena Village Board meeting on Tuesday, May 29, the Village honored Golden for his years of service with a villagewide proclamation of thanks and had several members of the board and Village staff speak highly of him. “We rarely have a chance to say something to someone who has taken 32 years of their lives and dedicated it to us,” said Mayor Joe Werner during the meeting. “That's what this man has …

I couldn't imagine anyone more deserving of a big salary than the people that risk their lives and invest their time in protecting and serving us people. Why should big companies' CEOs get paid billions to sit at a desk all day doing nothing at all, yet these hard working people such as firefighters barely make enough to support / start a family? I personally think not just Mokena firefighters …   more ›

Village Scraps Waste Water Treatment Plant Expansion—For Now

After bids for a proposed expansion to Mokena's Waste Water Treatment Plant came in too high, the Village Board decided to put the plans on hold, for now.

The Village of Mokena was all set to expand its Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) later this year, but plans hit a snag when bids came in well over budget. After securing all the necessary permits and going out to bid on expansion plans for the facility, the Village Board decided to reject all bids for the potential facility after the low bid came in at $6.9 million. Currently the Village has $6.1 million in escrow that is earmarked for the new facility. Village Administrator John Downs did say that the bid process was merely an “exercise in due diligence,” because recent studies by the Village showed that similar projects were coming in, on average, more than 30 percent under projected budgets. He added that Mokena was hoping bids would …

Rahm's Water Hike Would Trickle Down to Mokena

Village officials said a water rate hike in Chicago would hit Mokena "immediately."

Although drinking water for most Mokena homes and businesses passes through Chicago, Oak Lawn and Tinley Park on its path from Lake Michigan, the price hike Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel proposed would hit Mokena residents the same day. "Part of our agreement is that whatever Chicago does with their water rate immediately flows through to all of our communities," Mokena Mayor Joe Werner said. About 6,500 homes and businesses in Mokena are on Lake Michigan water, Village Administrator John Downs said. Those residents, as do all suburban residents who get their water from Chicago, currently pay $2.01 per 1,000 gallons of water. If Emanual's plan comes to pass, that $2.01 will rise to $2.51 on Jan. 1, 2012, with hikes each New Years for the next…

Village Board Work Session Series Continues Reviewing General Fund

The Mokena Village Board reviewed 11 fees and fines within the village with suggestions from Village Administrator John Downs and Village staff on how to handle the fines in next fiscal year.

During a work session of the Mokena Village Board, Village Administrator John Downs continued a series of updates for the board on the Village's General Fund. During the session, which took place on Monday, Sept. 26, Downs spoke about non-economic driven revenues for the general fund, including various licensing fees, impound fines and fines for false emergency alarms. “We framed this as one of our key discussion points for this year,” Downs said. The brief work session saw Downs outline mostly non-changes that he and the Village staff were suggesting to the board. In total, Downs and staff examined 11 categories of revenue for the general fund, with a recommendation to further review only three of those categories. Categories that were …

BE aware of your surroundings. Parents need to be the author of their childs continued awareness such as being respectful of drivers not being able to see well when the sun is at a certain level, hills and shrubbery may take away from the drivers ability to stop in time, etc. Many adults and children seem to be walking across streets and parking lots as if they commanded the road ways.
