'08 L-W East Football Player Goes to the NFL, Arizona Cardinals

Dan Giordano, 23, of Frankfort, signed as a free agent with the Cardinals on Saturday, his mom announced. Giordano was defensive standout for the Griffins before going on to play at the University of Cincinnati.

Lincoln-Way East defensive standout Dan Giordano signed as an NFL free agent with the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday night. His mother, Denise, announced the signing in a Facebook message to Patch. Giordano, of Frankfort, wasn't chosen during the three-day NFL draft, which ran from Thursday, April 25, to Saturday, April 27. But his signing after the draft means he has a chance to earn a spot on the Cardinals' roster this upcoming season. A four-year starter at defensive end for the Griffins, Giordano was named defensive player of the year in the Southwest Suburban Conference for the 2007 season as a senior. He also was part of East's 2005 team that won the 8A state title. Giordano, 23, continued as a defensive player at the University of …

Stay healthy and give it your best shot in camp with the AZ Cards. Typically free agents are a long-shot, so use this as your mental edge going in. Good luck.   more ›

College Signing Day: Lincoln-Way East's Lucky Number is 13

Senior girls track and field standout Aaliyah Brown the headliner in Lincoln-Way East's recruiting class.

The first time Lincoln-Way East girls track and field coach Caroline Gerritsen met Aaliyah Brown's father she was set back on her heels by his line of questioning. Angelo Brown wanted to know if the Griffins ran in any national track meets. Gerritsen soon learned she was in for the ride of her life when Aaliyah joined the program at Lincoln-Way East. Four years later, Brown is the reigning Gatorade Illinois Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year. And she stands at the head of Lincoln-Way East's February recruiting class, one that was unvieled during a national signing-day ceremony Wednesday afternoon in the Griffins' Lair at school. Eleven student-athletes made their college choices official, Brown opting for Texas A&M where she plans to …

Fuessel Orally Commits to Northwestern

The Lincoln-Way East quarterback, who committed to NIU earlier in the year, will now play for Northwestern.

Lincoln-Way East High School Griffins quarterback Tom Fuessel orally committed to Northwestern University on Saturday afternoon, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune. “I couldn’t pass that opportunity up,” Fuessel told the Tribune. “It’s a great school and coach (Pat) Fitzgerald is a great guy.” Fuessel committed to play for Northern Illinois University during the summer, the Tribune reports. However, he recently re-opened his recruitment due to concerns that Northern coach Dave Doeren might leave NIU after the Huskies’ successful 12-1 season, according to an earlier report from Sun-Time Media. Doeren announced on Saturday that he will be leaving NIU effective immediately to take a head coaching position at North Carolina State …

Fuessel Re-Opens College Recruitment

The Lincoln-Way East quarterback is reconsidering his oral commitment to NIU.

Lincoln-Way East High School Griffins quarterback Tom Fuessel has re-opened his college recruiting after orally committing to Northern Illinois University earlier in the year, according to a Nov. 27 report by Sun-Times Media. NIU’s Coach Dave Doeren was the first to give Fuessel the opportunity to play Division 1 football, and Sun-Times Media reports that Fuessel is still considering Northern. According to the report, Fuessel’s hesitation stemmed from concern that NIU’s successful 12-1 season could cause Doeren to leave the Huskies for a more prominent college football program. Doeren announced on Dec. 1 that he will leave NIU to take a head coaching position at North Carolina State University, according to a release from Northern. Doeren’…

PHOTOS: Lincoln-Way East Football Honored With Parade

The Griffins participated in a parade and ceremony after competing in the Class 7A state championship game.

Every game has a winner and a loser. It's a part of football, and it's a part of life. While the Lincoln-Way East High School Griffins did not win the Class 7A state championship title, they can hardly be called losers. They stepped out on that Memorial Stadium field as conference champions. They stepped out on that field 13-0. They gave all they had to give and then some more. They are definitely champions. After such a difficult loss, a parade may have been the last thing on the Griffins' minds. But the Lincoln-Way community was not going to let them hang their heads and sit at home. Local residents lined the streets with signs and cheered, giving their team a reason to smile. The team paraded down the streets of both Mokena and …

7A Football: L-W East's Corbett Shines in Title-Game Setback

Lincoln-Way East senior wide receiver and running back Justin Corbett made big plays in the second half as the Griffins rallied in a 10-8 loss to Glenbard West on Saturday night in the Class 7A state championship game.

Lincoln-Way East’s Justin Corbett felt like he left it all on the field. “No regrets,” was how he summed up his final high school football game. Corbett, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior wide receiver and running back, came up big in the second half of Lincoln-Way East’s 10-8 loss to Glenbard West in Saturday’s Class 7A state championship football game at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. He scored East’s only touchdown on a 35-yard run. Two plays earlier, he snared a 22-yard sideline pass from Tom Fuessel that pumped life into a Griffins’ offense that was bottled up by Glenbard West up to that point. Corbett finished with 82 yards rushing on 15 carries and 104 yards total offense. “We all put in our best effort,” he said. “We left it all on the …

As a Glenbard West fan, I have to say how impressed I was with what a great opponent your team was. The heart that your team played with was really amazing. Fuessel, Langenderfer (spelling?) and the whole team showed a lot of class and heart. They made the outcome uncertain until the very end and never gave up. Your whole community should be proud and treat them like the champions they really are…   more ›
