Kyle Langenderfer won the state championship for the second time on Feb. 16.
Lincoln-Way East High School senior Kyle Langenderfer took the Class 3A 152-pound class state wrestling championship on Feb. 16, according to the Chicago Tribune. This is his second year in a row receiving the state title. Langenderfer, who will wrestle at the University of Illinois next year, won all of his 42 matches this season. In order to take the title, Langenderfer defeated Brian Murphy, of Glenbard North High School, 6-5. “Brian is a phenomenal wrestler,” Langenderfer told the Chicago Tribune. “It was fun to compete against him. It was a battle of titans in a way. I tried not to get flustered, even when I got taken down for the first time this season. Three-time IHSA state wrestling medal winner and 2011-12 state champ Kyle Langenderfer headed a class of four Lincoln-Way East recruits announcing their college plans on signing day.
Lincoln-Way East's Kyle Langenderfer turned his thoughts away from football for a moment. He signed a national letter of intent Wednesday to wrestle next season at the University of Illinois. Langenderfer was one of four Lincoln-Way East student-athletes honored during a ceremony in the Griffins Liar. All four announced their college plans, their coaches, closest friends and family members on hand to cheer them on. Jorgi Calombaris (softball) will attend Valparaiso. Matt Stoner (golf) will attend Lewis and Dana Van Dyck (vollyeball) will attend Tusculum. Oak Forest's Courtney Kachlik outpolled five others in voting for Patch's Athlete of the Week, Feb. 12-18. Now, she is eligible for February Patch Athlete of the Month recognition. The candidates: Jubril Adekoya, junior, center/forward, boys basketball, Andrew. Adekoya delivered two more double-doubles as the T-Bolts notched victories No. 20 and 21 and became the winningest Andrew boys basketball team since 1989-90. Adekoya had 18 points and 16 rebounds in a 53-43 victory over Sandburg. Then, he followed up with 19 points and nine rebounds in a 58-31 victory over Thornridge. Lincoln-Way Central swept duals from district rivals L-W East, L-W West and L-W North to capture the Lincoln-Way Cup in wrestling Saturday at L-W North.
The Lincoln-Way Cup is changing addresses. After an exhausting quad wrestling meet between all four of the Lincoln-Way high school teams, the Cup found its way to Lincoln Way Central, as the Knights pinned their way to victory against their district rivals Saturday in Frankfort. As the Knights took on the Warriors, Griffins and Phoenix, their aggressive, hard-charging style quickly propelled early leads against their competition and led to a sweep in the quad. “That's the style we've had at Lincoln-Way for just a long time, over at Central, and I just kind of continued when I took over,” Knights coach Jason DePolo said. “That's exactly where we want to be, just pushing the pace the entire time."
