Meijer Supercenter is on track for new jobs and fresh revenue.
The Mokena-based Meijer Supercenter development is on track to bring in new jobs and fresh revenue. Kirk Zoellner, assistant village administrator, said the Meijer development, slated for location at the Mokena Marketplace retail center at the southwest corner of Route 30 and Wolf Road, is expected to generate $750,000 in fresh Village sales tax revenue. In addition, another $150,000 is expected to filter into the coffers at Mokena School District 159 in the form of property tax revenue, said Zoellner. The 190,000-square-foot supercenter is estimated to cost approximately $15 million. Construction is projected to begin on the retail supercenter in the coming months.
Mokena could be getting a Meijer supermarket as soon as summer 2014. The Midwestern retail chain decided last week to build a location in Mokena, after spending months in talks with the village. The store will include a grocery section, home goods, apparel, hardware, electronics, toys, pet supplies, a garden center, a drive-up pharmacy and a gas station. The Mokena location will bring approximately 250 full-time and part-time jobs to the area. “We’re pleased that they’ve made the decision to move forward with the store,” said Alan Zordan, director of economic …

After the park district would not rent fields to the Mokena Burros, the youth football and cheer program found their own space to play—the vacant Meijer development at Route 30 and Wolf Road. "We are thrilled to have been able to reach this agreement for our upcoming season," Dan LaValle, Burros board member and liaison for the recent lease negotiations said in a statement released Friday morning. "We want to personally thank Meijer Corporation in particular for their support of our program." This comes six days before 2012 registration for the 49-year-old program. Until now, the Burros always played at Mokena's Main Park. Earlier this week, park district Executive Director Jim Romanek said they would not rent fields to the Burros after …

“… 750K$ in fresh Village sales tax revenue.” Sounds good but it won’t be enough to cover the combined salaries and pension cost for the soon to be hired Economic Development Director and the associated staff when the new administration takes office. Maybe if Mokena can get even more stores and the related congestion that follows, along with more dead end jobs and increased crime rate, our great …   more ›
