Putt-Putt Between the Stacks

Children and teens in grades 4–12 took part in the Mokena Community Public Library's first ever mini-golf event on Wednesday, July 25. More than 40 attendees took their swings between the stacks during the hour-long event.

The Mokena Community Public Library invited children and teens to take a swing at a brand new event: mini-golf. The hour-long mini-golf extravaganza took place, Wednesday, July 25, with more than 40 children and teens taking part in the 9-hole course. “This is pretty much what we were hoping for,” said Luke Surdel, an employee at the library who helped plan the event. “We figured this would be a nice summer reading program. During the summer reading program we do a lot of really fun programs.” Each hole of the event featured a different theme, with children volunteers dressing up as Spider-Man, Super Mario, Abe Lincoln, Dorothy and more. Last Chance to Putt the Library

Students in fourth through 12th grades are invited to the library's mini-golf event on Wednesday, July 25. The event will take place from 3-4 p.m.

Step up to the tee and take your best shot between the stacks, as the Mokena Community Public Library transforms into a wonderland of greens, tees and obstacles on Wednesday, July 25, as part of the library's summer reading program. The mini-golf in the library event will take place from 3-4 p.m. On the first and second floors of the library. Students in grades 4–12 are encouraged to work their way towards low par as they start on the first floor of the library and follow the course around the floor, down the stairs and through the lower level. Kids Cool Off with A Few Scoops at the Mokena Library

The Mokena Community Library hosted Chef Michael Niksic as part of its "Reading is So Delicious," summer reading program on Tuesday, July 17. Chef Niksic gave a brief overview of ice cream's history, before serving up three tasty treats to attendees.

The Mokena Community Public Library had a sweet treat to beat the heat for youngsters who attended their summer program: Decadent Ice Cream with Chef Niksic. Chef Michael Niksic treated more than 20 children in attendance to three different types of specialty ice cream, while educating the children on a bit of ice cream's history. “[The kids] realize that I'm not like any other teacher,” Niksic said. “Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I'm an abnormality. [They're thinking] he's feeding us all this cool food.” For the kids, it was all about the ice cream, as each child had their favorite of the three, although there was one clear winner. “I liked the chocolate one, because of the fresh berries in it,” said Paris Heath, age 8. “…

You're Late! But the Library Forgives You

The Mokena Community Public Library is waiving all late fees for residents during the month of July. Residents with overdue items are encouraged to take advantage of the program while it lasts.

The Mokena Community Public Library is changing its checkout and return book system during the month of July, which means patrons are in luck. Those who check out a book and may have forgotten to return it will save a bit of cash; the library is waiving all late fees on books, and any other library materials. Members of the library staff said the fee waiver will last until July 31st and that residents who return books late are encouraged to return any overdue items. Chicago Bears Mascot Staley, Library Set to Educate on Healthy Living

Chicago Bears mascot, Staley, and the Mokena Community Public Library will host a healthy living class on Tuesday, July 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. The event will feature lessons on healthy living, eating right and proper exercise.

Mokena children of all ages have their own personal invite from a very special host—Chicago Bears mascot Staley.  Staley and the Mokena Community Library will offer a session on healthy living and eating with the Chicago Bears' program, First and Goal: How to Score a Touchdown for a Healthy Life. The hour-long event will take place Tuesday, July 10, from 10 to 11 a.m. “Going with the summer reading theme of 'Reading Is So Delicious,' [Staley] is going to be talking about health and eating healthy,” said Wendy Asbridge, Young Adults Coordinator at the library. Last Chance for Lego Mania at the Library

Lego Mania returns to the library Tuesday, June 26, for a 45-minute building party for fourth-through eighth-graders.

It's time for Mokena students to break out their best building skills as Lego Mania returns to the Mokena Community Public Library on Tuesday, June 26. Fourth- through eighth-graders are welcome to attend the Lego-centric event at the library, which will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. The annual event features thousands of bricks of Legos and a building explosion that often results in an enormous circular tower that can reach more than two feet tall. Last Chance for Pizza Tasting Contest at the Library

The Mokena Community Public Library is hosting a pizza tasting contest Thursday, June 14, from 3-4 p.m. for all students in fourth-eighth grades.

The Mokena Community Public Library is putting out a call to all pizza aficionados in grades 4–8 in Mokena. The library wants to know who's King of the Crust, the Sultan of Sauce and the Prince of Pepperoni, with its Pizza Tasting Contest on Thursday, June 14. Last Chance for Rock at Mokena Library

The library will host an hour-long classic rock show, featuring David Molinari, on Saturday, May 26 from 1 to 2 p.m.

Mokena residents that are ready to rock will have a chance to do just that Saturday, May 26, when the Mokena Community Public Library hosts David Molinari. Molinari, a Mokena native, will perform with Keith Kenston and Glen Ellison from 1-2 p.m. The performance, which is titled, “Oldies Rock N Roll,” will feature the trio rocking out to classic rock and roll songs. Last Chance to Submit to Teen Creativity Conest

The Mokena Community Public Library is looking for submissions to its 9th-12th grade contest, which ends Wednesday, May 16.

The library is looking for you, or at least art from you—if you're a high school student. The Mokena Community Public Library's Teen Creativity Contest ends Wednesday, May 16. The library has been accepting submissions for over three weeks and May 16 marks the last day submissions will be accepted. Prizes will will be distributed to the winners of the contest which is open to 9th-12th graders, on Friday, May 18 from 4-5 p.m, winners need not be present. Last Chance for Social Media Education

The Mokena Community Public Library will host a Social Media Basics Workshop on Friday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The workshop is being presented by the Workforce Services of Will County.

Does social media scare you to death? Have you wondered about the difference between a tweet and a status update, Facebook versus MySpace and questioned what LinkedIn is? The Mokena Community Public Library is stepping in to help Mokena residents looking to improve their social media IQ. The library will host a Social Media Basics Workshop on Friday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., presented by the Workforce Services of Will County. The workshop is designed to help attendees use social media in job searches and show them what potential employers look for when view applicant's social media profiles.
