Semi Topples Streetlamp

The sizable vehicle damaged property in downtown Mokena on its way through the village.

The driver of a semi truck that rolled through downtown Mokena was issued citations after his 70,000-pound vehicle toppled a streetlight. Jason Allen Earls, 55, of the 60200 block of East 190 Road in Fairland, Oklahoma, is charged with driving an over-length vehicle on a non-designated roadway, driving off the roadway and leaving the scene of a property damage incident. Mokena police received reports of a hit-and-run involving a semi at 6:18 p.m. Jan. 4 at the intersection of Front Street and Wolf Road. Upon arriving at the site, police discovered the streetlight from the southwest corner of the intersection tipped over and lying on the sidewalk. Road Rage on La Grange: Mokena Police Blotter

Mokena Police Department reports, Jan. 2 • Road Rage on La Grange.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 2 Alexander E. LaCasse, 21, of the 9400 block of Elm Avenue, was charged with disorderly conduct following an altercation at 1:06 p.m. at the intersection of 196th Street and S. La Grange Road. The charges were filed as the result of a traffic-related disagreement between LaCasse and another individual, who sustained leg injuries as a result of the incident. Reports say the encounter was fueled by road rage The victim reported the altercation on Jan. 2. LaCasse was arrested, photographed and issued a $750 I-bond on Jan. 6. His court date is Feb. 11. UPDATE: No Formal Possession Charges in Heroin Overdose Traffic Stop Case

Michael Matela was booked into Will County Jail pending several formal possession charges, none of which were filed, after a police traffic stop turned into a medical emergency.

Updated: 3:52 p.m. Thursday The Will County State's Attorney on Jan. 7 declined to file formal possession charges against Michael S. Matela, of Frankfort, after Mokena police performed a traffic stop on the car he was driving and discovered a man suffering from a heroin overdose in the car’s passenger seat. Formal charges for improper lane usage were filed against Matela. Matela was booked into Will County Jail on Jan. 4, pending formal charges for possession of a controlled substance, cannabis possession and paraphernalia possession.  He appeared in Will County Circuit Court on Jan. 17, where he received a sentence of $185 in fines and three months supervision for improper traffic lane use. --- A Frankfort man faces felony drug charges …

SUNDAY, DEC. 30 Unknown persons flattened five tires on two different vehicles at 3:58 p.m. on the 19300 block of Thornham Lane. The damage occurred while the owner of the vehicles was on vacation. Mokena Police Department reports, Dec. 25-29 • Christmas Day Theft • Man Arrested for Arkansas Warrant • Man Caught with Pot, Pipe and Grinder.

TUESDAY, DEC. 25 Two 20-pound propane tanks were stolen at 8:36 p.m. from the 11000 block of Third Street. Each tank was estimated to be worth $50. THURSDAY, DEC. 27 Steven A. McKinney, 28, of the 14400 block of W. St. Louis Avenue in Midlothian, was taken into custody on an out of state warrant from Arkansas for parole violation at 4:16 p.m. at the intersection of W. La Porte Road and Lakeview Way. SATURDAY, DEC. 29 Ryan M. Pierie, 21, of the 20400 block of Ashford Circle, was arrested for possession of less than 30 grams of cannabis and possession of drug equipment at 12:57 p.m. at the intersection of Swinford Court and Swinford Lane. Mobil Burglar Shatters Glass, Steals Cash and Cigarettes

The burglary took place just two days after Christmas.

Editor's note: This article was revised after publication. Mokena’s Mobil gas station was the victim of a burglary just a few days after Christmas. The event occurred at 4:11 a.m. on Dec. 27 at the La Grange Road gas station, according to reports from the Mokena Police Department. $100, 12 packs of cigarettes and the bottom drawer of the store’s cash register were stolen, police report. Police initially responded to an alarm at the gas station. When they arrived, they found the north entrance glass door shattered. Video surveillance revealed that the burglar drove a dark Chevy Venture minivan and broke the glass with a sledgehammer before entering the business.
