Mokena Locks In with Electrical Aggregation

Village residents who opt in to electrical aggregation could see nearly $500 in savings during the first year of a two-year contract between the Village and Integrys for supplying homes and small businesses with electricity.

The decision is in and residents of Mokena should get ready to save a bit of change on their electric bills soon, according to village administration. After Mokena residents voted to approve electrical aggregation, Mokena went to bid for cheaper electricity options, with the winning bid from Integrys coming in 46 percent lower than ComEd's current rate. “It's a very good time for us to be in the market, we kind of hit the sweet spot with this one I think,” said Kirk Zoellner, Mokena's Assistant Village Administrator, during the Mokena Village Board meeting on Monday, June 11. The 46 percent savings means that an average home in Mokena, which uses 12,200 kWh (kilowatt hours) annually, would save $482 per year on its electrical bill. “There …

Fire Chief Ted Golden has served the Mokena community for the past 32 years and on Friday, June 1, he will step away from his post. After working his way up the ranks of the Mokena Fire Protection District from code enforcement officer to the highest rank of chief, Golden leaves behind a career—and his dream since the age of five.  During the Mokena Village Board meeting on Tuesday, May 29, the Village honored Golden for his years of service with a villagewide proclamation of thanks and had several members of the board and Village staff speak highly of him. “We rarely have a chance to say something to someone who has taken 32 years of their lives and dedicated it to us,” said Mayor Joe Werner during the meeting. “That's what this man has …

I couldn't imagine anyone more deserving of a big salary than the people that risk their lives and invest their time in protecting and serving us people. Why should big companies' CEOs get paid billions to sit at a desk all day doing nothing at all, yet these hard working people such as firefighters barely make enough to support / start a family? I personally think not just Mokena firefighters …   more ›

Village Surges Forward with Electrical Aggregation

The Mokena Village Board continued to press forward on the electrical aggregation front, as the board approved the latest ordinance in a unanimous vote, moving the process one step closer to a late summer, or early fall, completion.

The Mokena Village Board held another public hearing on electrical aggregation May 29, and again found themselves addressing an otherwise empty boardroom.  That didn't stop board members from moving forward with the Village's switch to aggregation, which could see the price of electricity for those who opt in to the program drop a significant amount. “We could see some really, really good savings," Zoellner said. "Anything is possible, I feel fairly confident that it's going to come back looking good for us." During the hearing, Assistant Village Administrator Kirk Zoellner outlined the next steps in the process following the board's final approval of the electrical aggregation ordinance, which passed unanimously. According to Zoellner, …

Look Out, Emerald Ash Borer: Mokena is Coming for You

Mokena Public Works Director Lou Tiberi outlined the plans for treatment and removal of Ash trees on Village property through 2021 at Monday, May 14, Village Board meeting.

“The Emerald Ash Borer is here in Mokena, it's pretty much everywhere on the southside of Chicago,” said Lou Tiberi, Mokena's Public Works Director. The Emerald Ash Borer has become the latest problem for villages, cities and towns across the Chicagoland area, as the bug burrows in and slowly kills off thousands of Ash trees. In Mokena, Tiberi said that there are to be 22 ash trees removed from Village property in fiscal year 2012, with another 40 trees scheduled for removal in fiscal year 2013. During a brief presentation before the Mokena Village Board, Tiberi outlined a plan through 2021 to combat the bug. The plan calls for a complete inventory of every ash tree in Mokena, and then treatment steps to begin on infected trees. Trees that…

Village Scraps Waste Water Treatment Plant Expansion—For Now

After bids for a proposed expansion to Mokena's Waste Water Treatment Plant came in too high, the Village Board decided to put the plans on hold, for now.

The Village of Mokena was all set to expand its Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) later this year, but plans hit a snag when bids came in well over budget. After securing all the necessary permits and going out to bid on expansion plans for the facility, the Village Board decided to reject all bids for the potential facility after the low bid came in at $6.9 million. Currently the Village has $6.1 million in escrow that is earmarked for the new facility. Village Administrator John Downs did say that the bid process was merely an “exercise in due diligence,” because recent studies by the Village showed that similar projects were coming in, on average, more than 30 percent under projected budgets. He added that Mokena was hoping bids would …

I just saw this in the Patch. I think that it would be great if Lincoln Way Special Rec. Assoc. could bring their funraiser out to the new Mokena Farmer's Market. Don't know if it's possible though, but read on with this small clip from the article...... For those who have had the chance to experience a Butter Braid pastry, its evident this fundraiser will be different. For those who have not, …   more ›

Two New Businesses Coming to 191st and LaGrange Road

The Village of Mokena is set to welcome back Scrementi's in a new location and ready to welcome new business Legends Grill to the Boulevard Plaza, at the corner of 191st Street and Lagrange Road.

Residents should get ready to welcome back a familiar face and save some room for a new food spot in the coming months, as Mokena will welcome two resturants to the Boulevard Plaza this summer. Scrementi's, which was formerly located at 9301 W. 191st St., is set to return, while Legends Grill opens up shop in the plaza some time in June. "Legends Grill got started before Scrementi's, but since then Scrementi's has caught up to them, so now I'm expecting them to both open up around June or July, probably June though," said Alan Zordan, Mokena's Director of Economic and Community Development. The two businesses will be located in the B Building of the Boulevard Plaza, with Scrementi's located in the far west end and Legends in the far east …
