Fuessel Orally Commits to Northwestern

The Lincoln-Way East quarterback, who committed to NIU earlier in the year, will now play for Northwestern.

Lincoln-Way East High School Griffins quarterback Tom Fuessel orally committed to Northwestern University on Saturday afternoon, according to a report by the Chicago Tribune. “I couldn’t pass that opportunity up,” Fuessel told the Tribune. “It’s a great school and coach (Pat) Fitzgerald is a great guy.” Fuessel committed to play for Northern Illinois University during the summer, the Tribune reports. However, he recently re-opened his recruitment due to concerns that Northern coach Dave Doeren might leave NIU after the Huskies’ successful 12-1 season, according to an earlier report from Sun-Time Media. Doeren announced on Saturday that he will be leaving NIU effective immediately to take a head coaching position at North Carolina State …

Fuessel Re-Opens College Recruitment

The Lincoln-Way East quarterback is reconsidering his oral commitment to NIU.

Lincoln-Way East High School Griffins quarterback Tom Fuessel has re-opened his college recruiting after orally committing to Northern Illinois University earlier in the year, according to a Nov. 27 report by Sun-Times Media. NIU’s Coach Dave Doeren was the first to give Fuessel the opportunity to play Division 1 football, and Sun-Times Media reports that Fuessel is still considering Northern. According to the report, Fuessel’s hesitation stemmed from concern that NIU’s successful 12-1 season could cause Doeren to leave the Huskies for a more prominent college football program. Doeren announced on Dec. 1 that he will leave NIU to take a head coaching position at North Carolina State University, according to a release from Northern. Doeren’…

7A Football: L-W East's Corbett Shines in Title-Game Setback

Lincoln-Way East senior wide receiver and running back Justin Corbett made big plays in the second half as the Griffins rallied in a 10-8 loss to Glenbard West on Saturday night in the Class 7A state championship game.

Lincoln-Way East’s Justin Corbett felt like he left it all on the field. “No regrets,” was how he summed up his final high school football game. Corbett, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound senior wide receiver and running back, came up big in the second half of Lincoln-Way East’s 10-8 loss to Glenbard West in Saturday’s Class 7A state championship football game at Memorial Stadium in Champaign. He scored East’s only touchdown on a 35-yard run. Two plays earlier, he snared a 22-yard sideline pass from Tom Fuessel that pumped life into a Griffins’ offense that was bottled up by Glenbard West up to that point. Corbett finished with 82 yards rushing on 15 carries and 104 yards total offense. “We all put in our best effort,” he said. “We left it all on the …

As a Glenbard West fan, I have to say how impressed I was with what a great opponent your team was. The heart that your team played with was really amazing. Fuessel, Langenderfer (spelling?) and the whole team showed a lot of class and heart. They made the outcome uncertain until the very end and never gave up. Your whole community should be proud and treat them like the champions they really are…   more ›

Football: L-W East Defense Shows No Mercy for Knight Quarterbacks

Lincoln-Way East moves to 7-0, while holding onto the Dave McKay Gridiron Grail trophy for the twelfth consecutive year in its 36-6 rout of Lincoln-Way Central.

Breaking It Down: A good portion of Lincoln-Way East fans were able to leave the frigid, metal bleachers at halftime of Friday night's contest feeling confident about how the rest of the game would go, as Tom Fuessel was able to help build a comfortable 24-0 lead over Lincoln-Way Central. Fuessel frustrated the Lincoln-Way Central defense gaining over 300 yards combined through the air and ground, until he and the majority of the Griffin starters were pulled mid-way through the third quarter. Lincoln-Way Central's defensive line was able to sack Fuessel four times, yet was worn down quickly by trying to chase the quarterback down on his scrambling attempts. If not for Lincoln-Way East having over double the amount of penalties that the …

FOOTBALL: Griffins Blast Bolingbrook 42-19

Lincoln-Way East's offense is keyed by quarterback Tom Fuessel and his four total touchdowns, while the Bolingbrook Raiders were derailed by injuries, including one to stud quarterback Aaron Bailey.

Breaking It Down: The second play of the game saw Illinois recruit Aaron Bailey make a beautiful late pitch on an option play that went 84 yards for a touchdown. Unfortunately for the Raiders, the play would be Bailey's last of the game, as he injured his knee on the play and never returned to the game. With Bailey's injury derailing the battle of the quarterbacks, the Griffins' Tom Fuessel put on a show to power his team to the win. Fuessel had four total touchdowns (3 rushing, 1 throwing) and sparked Lincoln-Way to a impressive 42-19 victory. Patch’s MVP: Tom Fuessel, quarterback, Lincoln-Way East. Touchdown runs of 30, 17 and 11 yards, along with a touchdown pass of 34 yards keyed the Griffins' offense. Fuessel finished the game with 64…

Football: Fuessel, L-W East Pass Test in Win Over Homewood-Flossmoor

Lincoln-Way East 35, Homewood-Flossmoor 20: Senior quarterback Tom Fuessel showed he can get the job done with his arm as well as his legs in the Griffins' big victory Friday night in Frankfort.

Breaking It Down: Senior quarterback Tom Fuessel played on sore legs and ankles in the second half of Lincoln-Way East’s 35-20 football victory over Homewood-Flossmoor in a Southwest Suburban Blue showdown on Friday night in Frankfort. His arm was fine. Fuessel threw a 38-yard pass to Justin Corbett to highlight a six-play, 64-yard knockout scoring drive. The Griffins (4-0, 2-0) punched the ball in on a 1-yard run by Brian Casey and extended their lead to 28-14. The Fuessel-to-Corbett connection came on a third-and-12 play from the East 34. H-F (3-1, 1-1) closed to within 28-20 on 4-yard TD pass from Ronald Johnson to Taje Smith. But the Vikings’ point-after kick was blocked. And East closed the scoring on a 10-yard TD run by Casey with 35…
