Watering restrictions to be enforced through the spring and summer seasons.
All Village of Mokena residents are reminded that seasonal watering restrictions are now in effect and will remain in effect throughout the summer season. The Village of Mokena is currently operating under standard summer GREEN ZONE restrictions, which means that outdoor lawn watering is allowed on an odd/even basis from 7-11 a.m. and from 7-11 p.m. On odd-numbered days of the month, residents with odd-numbered addresses may water their lawns, and on even-numbered days of the month, residents with even-numbered addresses may water their lawns, Kirk Zoellner, assistant village administrator. Public Works Director Craig Heim retires after 37 years for the Village of Mokena.
A Mokena legend was honored April 11 by past mayors and trustees. Craig Heim, public works director for 37 years, officially retired. Known by the community as the tall guy with red hair, Heim started his career with the village in 1975, performing street maintenance, according to the website for the Village of Mokena. His commitment and dedication helped him to advance through the chief position in the public works department. He's most noted for facilitating the community's transition in 2002 to Lake Michigan water. Visit the Village website for more information on the Heim's farewell. If you love to plant wildflowers and enjoy beautifying the community, come out for the annual Clean-Up Day.
Mokena's annual Clean-Up Day brings together the community and nature. Plan to bring your gloves, rakes and enthusiasm and participate in the annual spring clean-up day, from 9 a.m. to noon throughout downtown Mokena. Mokena's Boy Scouts and members of VFW Post 725 will join in to clean up and plant wildflowers at various locations all over the Village. "We will clean up until about 12:00 noon, then head to Village Hall for a well-deserved hot dog cookout," said Kirk Zoellner, assistant village administrator. It was clear early in the evening that it was a Republican sweep for Frankfort Township officials.
Those who cast a ballot Tuesday gave incumbents for Frankfort Township a clear vote of confidence. Every office and the trustees were re-elected for another four-year term. The after-the-polls-close party at Jameson's Pub, 9545 W. St. Francis Road, where Republican incumbents gathered to watch the returns, got enthusiastic early. As each of the precincts came in, it was a clear victory for those who have been running the township for the past four years. The winners are: Kral, assessor, was the top vote-getter for Frankfort Township. He raked in a total of 5,546 compared to challenger George Perros, with 2,395. Carlson re-gained his position as highway commissioner with 5,022 votes compared to challenger Mike Benoit, who received 2,742 …

Mokena's Downtown Merchants Association is excited about the summer line-up for the second annual Farmers Market.
The Mokena Downtown Merchants Association updated Village trustees about their plans for this summer's farmers market. Association spokesperson Charlene Bergman told the Village Board on Monday that the second season of the farmers market was going to be bigger and better this year. Already more than 40 vendors, including civic groups, have signed on as regulars for booths at the Saturday farmers market. The season is set to begin on April 27 and ends Oct. 26. There will be plenty of fresh baked good, crafts and specialty items, filling spots along Front Street, said Bergman. A survey is underway to detect possible leaks in the Lake Michigan water delivery system. Residents seeing unfamiliar trucks or cars stopped in the middle of Mokena’s streets have no reason to be alarm, said Kirk Zoellner, assistant village administrator. Contract staff from ME Simpson Co. are out and about conducting their annual leak survey of Mokena’s Lake Michigan water delivery system. Simpson personnel use high tech sonar equipment to detect even the smallest of leaks in the system, according to Zoellner. A broadband communications firm got the okay from Village trustees to lease the village water tower for five years.
A broadband communications firm got the okay form Village trustees to install transmitting equipment on the Village water tower. A five-year lease agreement was signed. Kirk Zoellner, assistant village administrator, said the five-year lease agreement with Cygnus Communications, 19635 97th Ave, will annually bring in $2,400 in rent, with payments increasing by 5 percent each successive year. "It's automatically renewable in five-year increments up to a total of 20 years." A year ago, Cygnus moved to town. The 10-year-old company has numerous similar agreements with municipalities from Mokena to Chebanse in Iroquois County, according to Joe Fratantoni, operations manager at Cygnus.
