Lincoln-Way Walgreens Employees Join Diabetes Walk at Soldier Field

Pharmacy managers and store clerks are joining a 5K Walk to fight diabetes.

The staff at Walgreens stores in New Lenox and Mokena know their customers as friends. That's why they're joining the American Diabetes Association's Walk to Stop Diabetes, beginning at 10 a.m. Oct. 20, at Soldier Field in Chicago.   In a store where people come for prescriptions and to talk to the pharmacist, they gain more than a bottle of pills and directions on how best to take the medication. They gain friends—a lot of them. It's an authentic relationship, said Walgreens managers from New Lenox's Schoolhouse store and Mokena's store on Wolf Road. "The regular customers—those who come in three times a week or more—are not just faces; they're Barb, Mary Ann, Jose or Mike. These people come in my store, and I can't help but to care about…

Phony Bills Passed in New Lenox; Tips for Identifying Authentic Cash

Watching your money closely doesn't mean to tighten your belt.

So far in September, New Lenox police have been called twice by businesses that unwittingly took in counterfeit bills. On Sept. 8 employees at the Barber's Chair on Route 30 near Vine Street took in a $10 counterfeit bill, and Walmart lost $100 to a phony money scam on Sept. 1.    Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz said counterfeit bill passing is a sporadic problem in New Lenox, and the amount of loss varies. Most retail stores have detector pens at the cash register, and the clerks are trained to carefully eye ball $100 and $50 bills. The problem is that counterfeits more often than not come in the form of $10 and $20 bills, he said. The counterfeiters know how to take advantage of a situation. They wait for a busy evening or Saturday to pay …

Sweet Gesture Helps Out Veterans

A New Lenox man encourages donations to the Manteno veterans home through candy.

A moment of sweet inspiration has brightened the day of hundreds of Illinois veterans. About four years ago, New Lenox resident Jim Kranz noticed a display of candy on post-holiday clearance at Walgreens on Schoolhouse Road, where he works as a cashier. On a whim, he bought some – a lot. It was more than he needed, so he called the Illinois Veterans Home at Manteno to see if anyone there could use it. Come on down, they said. Since then, Kranz has made monthly visits to the Veterans Home, each time donating roughly 250 individual bars and bags of candy. It’s been a group effort, Kranz said. In addition to buying the clearance candy, he has also collected candy donated by others. The Manteno Veterans Home houses about 260 veterans, men and …
