Election 2011: Richmond Joins Incumbents Labriola, Engler on Village Board

Jim Richmond will take his seat as Mokena's newest village trustee.

Jim Richmond will trade in his current title of park district commissioner for the shiny new one of village trustee. "All the candidates did a great job," Richmond said of village board campaign. "Everyone worked hard." Richmond, who won 23 percent of the vote in Tuesday's election (according to unofficial results from the Will County Clerk's Office), came in third in the contest for three village board seats. Incumbents Debbie Engler and Don Labriola kept their seats by winning 26 and 24 percent of the vote, respectively. "I am ecstatic," Engler said about her win. "I was nervous, because you never can tell, but I can't wait for the next four years." Engler said one of her goals in her next term will be to bring more taxing bodies to …

Election 2011: Voters Say 'No' to 159 Referendum for a Third Time; School Board Elections Very Close

As of Tuesday night, school board candidates Joe Spalla, Patrick Markham and Carrie Zakula, were within 20 votes of one another.

For the third time since last February, Mokena voters said no to a referendum that would have raised property taxes and decreased Mokena School District 159's $2.7 million deficit.  According to unofficial results, 2,557 voted no (54 percent) and 2,167 voted yes (46 percent). The measure would have increased property taxes by 29 cents per $100 equalized assessed value. "Everyone has had to learn to do more with less," said school board candidate Mike Ford, who campaigned on a platform of fiscal responsibility and who led the polls with 25 percent of the Board of Education vote. "The voters have spoken for the third time." Mary Cummins, a parent and member of the committee for the referendum, said she was disappointed with the result. "It …

Election 2011: Village Board Candidate Jim Richmond

To get a more in-depth view of candidates, Mokena Patch asked them several issue-based questions.

Four candidates are vying for three seats on the Mokena Village Board of Trustees. Newcomer Jim Richmond talked with us about his ideas for bringing new businesses to town, maintaining services and keeping the budget balanced. What ideas do you have to spur economic development in Mokena? If you look at the demographics of our area, we're a target-rich environment for business owners and developers. The fact that we're close to the interstate and Chicago should also be attractive to new businesses. If we create an environment that lets them know we're willing to work with them, it will help drive developers to our town, and that reputation will spread to even more developers. What ideas do you have for dealing with the village’s decreasing…

Election 2011: Village Board Candidate Bob Poole

To get a more in-depth view of candidates, Mokena Patch asked them several issue-based questions.

Four candidates are vying for three seats on the Mokena Village Board of Trustees. Newcomer Bob Poole talked with us about his ideas for bringing new businesses to town, maintaining services and keeping the budget balanced. What ideas do you have to spur economic development in Mokena? I would look toward working more with business owners and developers. I think the village board has made it kind of a hurdle to come into town. At times, I’ve seen business owners become exasperated as far as building regulations. It seems to me not forthcoming. So I would try to foster a healthier relationship with businesses and business owners. What ideas do you have for dealing with the village’s decreasing and stagnating fund balances? I would look at …

Election 2011: Village Board Candidate Don Labriola

To get a more in-depth view of candidates, Mokena Patch asked them several issue-based questions.

Four candidates are vying for three seats on theMokena Village Board of Trustees. Incumbent Don Labriola talked with us about his ideas for bringing new businesses to town, maintaining services and keeping the budget balanced. What ideas do you have to spur economic development in Mokena? We have some pretty effective policies on the books right now, but it’s obvious with the way the economy is, the interest to develop in Mokena is not what it used to be. If you look at the past eight years, we brought in JC Penney, Petsmart, another CVS, businesses that could have gone anywhere, and they chose Mokena. There were no incentives or anything, but from talking with them, they say they have never been treated so well as by our village board. I …

Anaya Withdraws From Village Board Race

Pedro 'Pete' Anaya withdrew his name from the race for Village Trustee, citing commitments to his job and family.

Twenty nine-year-old Pedro 'Pete' Anaya withdrew his name Sunday night from the list of candidates running for the Mokena village board in April. In a letter sent to local media, Anaya said commitments to his job and his family prevented him from continuing his campaign. "Being 29 and father of a 3-year-old daughter and a newborn boy demands much time," Anaya wrote in the letter. "After sitting with my wife of five years, Kristin and I decided that it would not be fair to commit to this position, if I cannot be there for my family first." Since Anaya's withdrawal from the race, Mokena residents will have four candidates to choose from for three open positions on April 5: incumbents Debbie Engler and Don Labriola, as well as challengers Bob…
