Yunker Farm is Spot for Annual Farm and Barn Festival

Plans are firming up for the Annual Farm and Barn Festival, sponsored by the Mokena Community Park District.

The schedule for the Annual Farm and Barn Festival, sponsored by the Mokena Community Park District, is set for the one-day outdoor event.

The community's historic Yunker Farm, 10824 W. LaPorte Road, is the base of operations for the Aug. 17 celebration. From 10 a.m. till 11 p.m., park district officials say there will be plenty to do. Activities will be set up at Yunker Farm and across the street at The Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center, 10824 W. LaPorte Road.

The sigificance of the celebration dates back to historical harvest festivals that marked the end of the growing season for agricultural communities throughout Illinois. "This unique event also gives guests the opportunity to see and experience farm life from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through entertaining farming demonstrations such as sheep shearing, woolcarding, corn grinding, blacksmithing, and more! In addition, the day is filled with entertainment and old-fashioned contests for kids of all ages," according to the park district website.

A flea market is planned from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on the East Soccer Fields at the Oaks Recreation & Fitness Center. It's a chance to sell your old and new wares. Park district officials welocme fresh produce, new and used crafts, clothing, tools and more.

Buyers will be admitted free. Vendors should look for information on the website
