M159 Supt. Omar Castillo Greets Students

The first day of school starts out with a flurry of activity at Mokena Elementary School.

The first day of school at Mokena School Dist. 159 put a spotlight on the new superintendent's commitment to the job.

Supt. Omar Castillo stood Aug. 21 outside Mokena Elementary School, 11244 Willowcrest Lane, greeting youngsters as they bounded enthusiastically off mustard yellow buses.

He bent down low to give eye contact to primary school students. Handing out pencils to as many students that he could, Castillo said, "Happy first day of school."

An hour or so before the bell rang; Castillo boarded one of the buses and traveled the morning route with the bus driver to pick up students.

Castillo, who replaces former Supt. Steve Stein, said he wants to work with community, teachers and parents in creating a healthy environment for learning.
